    The Customer

    The Royal Marsden is the world’s first hospital to exclusively focus on cancer diagnosis, treatment, research, and education. Founded by Dr. William Marsden in 1851, today their three locations improve the lives of 50,000 cancer patients from the UK and abroad each year. The Royal Marsden has vowed to never stop looking for ways to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.

    The Issue

    The Royal Marsden required a secure way for medical professionals outside the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) network to access the Coordinate My Care (CMC) application. CMC allows patients to record their decisions and wishes for their treatment plan, which is made available to hospitals, the ambulance service, and emergency response dispatchers. Due to the confidential nature of this information, The Royal Marsden wanted all non-NHS users to use two-factor authentication to access CMC. They contacted authen2cate because their hosting provider was unable to provide sufficient security measures.

Now after entering their username, non-NHS users elect to receive a registration code via email or phone, enter a PIN, or answer a secret question. Once successful, they are taken to the CMC login page. This ensures only fully authorized users gain access to critical patient information.
